Key Stage 3 Mathematics
In Years 7 and 8 staff work on developing students’ understanding of mathematical patterns and building confidence. It is vital for us that students learn to see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and understand the future employment opportunities a good understanding of mathematics will bring.
The scheme of learning for mathematics at George Pindar School is a series of Stages that we work through at a pace appropriate for different levels of ability. This learning is enhanced through regular use of two main online learning platforms: Mathswatch and SAM Learning.
In Year 7 students are placed into sets and have 3 one hour lessons per week. Topics in Year 7 include number work, statistics, shape, space and measures and the introduction of algebra. At key points across Year 7 students are challenged to complete assessments and to develop their thinking skills by tackling problem solving activities. All Year 7 students complete a Calculator Licence course to ensure they can use Casio scientific calculators efficiently which will stand them in good stead throughout secondary school.
In Year 8 students are placed in sets and they have 3 one hour lessons per week. Again students are challenged to complete assessments and to further develop their thinking skills by tackling problem solving activities. All Year 8 students will complete our ‘Maths Works’ module, which focuses on maths in the world of work.
