British Values

The Compass Academy is committed to serving its community. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

We follow equal opportunities guidance which guarantees that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar. The Compass Academy is dedicated to preparing pupils for their adult life beyond the school, ensuring that it promotes and reinforces British values to all its pupils.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools. The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.

The Compass Academy uses strategies within the National Curriculum and beyond to secure such outcomes for pupils.

The Compass Academy strives endlessly to ensure that its pupils leave with the strongest foundation of values upon which to build a successful life and a successful contribution to our society.

We hold regular pupil council meetings, where decisions made directly impact on the school community.

We promote equality by providing all pupils with the best possible educational package to suit their needs, increasing their life chances and opportunities for the future. This is supported by enrichment opportunities, developing their experiences, resilience and endurance skills.

The actions we have taken to prevent radicalisation and promote British Values:

• A strong emphasis on our pupils’ Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development, through relationships, enrichment and the curriculum.
• Safeguarding practices, policies and training is up-to-date and regularly reviewed and amended, covering all aspects of the Prevent Strategy.
• Encouragement of critical thinking by pupils through curriculum opportunities and staff CPD.
• Demonstrate the importance of voting, democracy and having a voice through the pupil council.
• Enabling pupils to learn and respect those from cultures, countries and religions different to their own through RE, PSHCE. An overt or covert focus on British Values and SMSC in all lessons.
• Challenge all forms of racism or prejudice, either by adults or children.
• Provide strong emotional and pastoral support and look out for individuals or groups of children or adults who may be isolated.
• Develop links with local charities, raise awareness of how the individual can make a positive difference.
